EXPEDITION MID-ATLANTIC LAUNCH
Led here by mature white sharks Mary Lee and Katharine, OCEARCH and its team of collaborating scientists are embarking on their 29th expedition. The team’s goal is to gather data on the ecology, physiology, and behavior of sharks in the Atlantic Ocean, and to increase the sample size of the research started in 2012 in Cape Cod, MA.
WHY SHARKS ARE IMPORTANT
Sharks are extremely important to a healthy ecosystem of our oceans. They are apex predators and they are at the top of the ocean food chain. So if you remove the top of the food chain, there’s a whole shift in our ecosystem and it could collapse.
SHARK ULTRASOUNDS
The information gained from the ultrasound images will hopefully help us piece together where sharks are breeding and how they’re using the Mid Atlantic.
EXPEDITION WRAP UP
Two Sand tiger sharks were tagged and released. One mature male and one mature female were acoustically tagged off the coast of Delaware. On both sharks we got blood, placed an acoustic tag, collected parasites, a muscle biopsy, and we are able to perform an ultrasound exam on the female.

The expedition will take place in the mid-atlantic region, which includes Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, and New Jersey

When is the research expedition?

The expedition begins on June 23, 2017 and ends on July 13, 2017. The expedition will kick off with education and outreach events from June 23 – 25 in Norfolk, VA and the research will begin on June 26th.
