BY THE NUMBERS
CURRENT PROJECT: WESTERN NORTH ATLANTIC WHITE SHARK STUDY

OCEARCH is on a mission to solve the Global White Shark Puzzle. There are nine populations of white sharks across the globe and OCEARCH’s goal is to assist regional scientists to better understand the life of the white shark in each of these populations.

Over the past decade OCEARCH has been studying the western North Atlantic white shark population, whose range extends from Atlantic Canada to the east of the United States and into the Gulf of Mexico. After sampling, tagging and releasing nearly 100 sharks, and collecting data for up to 25 research projects on every animal studied in this region, OCEARCH has almost successfully solved the life history puzzle of this white shark population.

EXPEDITION NORTHBOUND II LAUNCHING SOON

OCEARCH is heading back to the southeast United States for our 47th ocean research expedition to learn more about white sharks as they end their overwintering period and transition north for the summer. The goal is to study mature animals of both sexes to better understand how they utilize their overwintering area and provide insight on their reproductive readiness this time of year. Expedition Northbound II takes place from April 1-21. Explore in real time with us @OCEARCH.
